Antique nursery rhyme book print - original R Caldecott children's picture book illustration
A wonderful original illustration by Randolph Caldecott from a 19th century picture book containing nursery rhymes and children’s stories. This is an original lithograph print not a reproduction.
Randolph Caldecott's original image of the Sing a song of sixpence nursery rhyme was published in the 1880s. This colourful lithographic image shows the maid hanging out the washing - before the blackbird comes to peck off her nose! On the back is a picture of the black bird.
Caldecott was a British artist and illustrator (1846 - 1886) who greatly influenced the illustration of children's books in the 19th century. This would have either have come directly from a book or were used as samples to show the illustrations to be used in a book. The name of the publishers on another image from this collection would indicate this image is from a 19th century edition.
It would look fantastic mounted and framed and would work well in a nursery, playroom or child’s room. Condition is good with a small mark to the bottom of the page and signs the paper has been handled. The image is bright and clear. The print measures 26 cm by 37.5 cm.
