Antique magic lantern glass slide
A wonderful Edwardian glass slide which would originally have been used in a magic lantern.
This Magic Lantern slide was created in the late Victorian / Edwardian era and is made of glass with green paper edges. Originally it would have been used in a 'magic lantern' machine where slides were placed into a slot and manually 'slid' to display each image, with a light illuminate the image upon a wall or white screen.
This particular image is of a travel scene and includes images of horses pulling a carriage, a windmill, some boats on a bay with a volcano in the background, a ruined castle and a road leading towards this mountains. You can imagine this been shown with tales of faraway lands and exotic journeys . The slide is in good vintage condition with clear images but with some wear from age. It measures 16 cm by 4.5 cm.
An interesting little slice of history. I love to think of all the people who must have viewed and enjoyed these slides in a previous era. Nowadays It could be displayed against a windowpane or against a light box or placed in a glass frame.
